Germany announced on Monday that it will donate 100,000 doses of MPOX vaccine from its military stockpile to help combat the outbreak in Africa. Last week, France announced that
it was donating 100,000 doses of MPOX vaccine
to affected countries. The United States also said it would donate
50,000 doses to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The German government spokesperson
response to the mpox outbreak, which has been declared a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). The declaration follows an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has spread to neighboring countries and has been exacerbated by the emergence of a new strain of the virus, clade Ib, known for its rapid transmission.
In addition to the vaccine donation,
Germany will provide financial support to WHO through various mechanisms to strengthen efforts to combat MPOX. The country will also collaborate with the GAVI vaccine alliance to provide assistance to its African partners.
Currently,
Germany has around 117,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine, acquired in 2022 and stored by the military. Part of this stock
Any decision on the replenishment of vaccine stocks will be made at a later date, depending on needs and developments in the situation.
